Packing Slip vs Packing List vs Shipping Label (+Template)

Three shipping documents get confused constantly: the packing slip, the packing list, and the shipping label. They overlap, but they do different jobs.

Packing slip

Lives inside the box. Lists what is in that specific box: SKU, description, quantity. Usually no prices. The recipient uses it to check their order.

Packing list

Lives with the shipment (often in a pouch on the lead carton). Summarizes the entire shipment — multiple boxes, total pieces, total weight. Customs and freight forwarders use it.

Shipping label

Lives on the box. The carrier-scannable label with from/to address, tracking number, service level, and barcodes. Generated by the carrier (or a label tool).

Quick rules

One packing slip per box (inside).
One packing list per shipment (often outside, in a pouch).
One shipping label per box (outside).

Is a packing slip the same as an invoice?

No. A packing slip lists what is in the box (often no prices). An invoice is the demand for payment.
