A delivery challan is a GST transport document that moves goods without a tax invoice — used for job work, branch and stock transfers, goods sent on approval, and liquid gas where the quantity is unknown at dispatch. Rule 55 of the CGST Rules, 2017 fixes the fields and requires three copies: original for the consignee, duplicate for the transporter, triplicate for the consignor.

Number challans in a strict serial sequence — 16 characters max — and note the date, consignee, and return status against each, so job-work material never goes missing. Fill the challan in the online generator and it auto-totals quantity and taxable value as you type.

Field teams that still carry a delivery challan book can print this page in triplicate: 25 or 50 consecutively numbered sheets give you the same challan book format without a printer's minimum order. Prefer typing? Use the delivery challan template Word version, or open the generator to set your delivery challan design — logo, accent colour, stamp — before exporting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a delivery challan in GST?

Under Rule 55 of the CGST Rules, 2017, a delivery challan is the document that travels with goods moved without a tax invoice — job work, branch or stock transfers, sale on approval, exhibitions, and liquid gas where quantity is unknown at dispatch. It must carry a serial number of 16 characters or fewer, GSTIN of both parties if registered, HSN codes, quantity, taxable value, and the place of supply for inter-state movement.

What is a delivery challan book, and do I still need one?

A delivery challan book is a pre-printed pad of serially numbered challans in duplicate or triplicate, with carbon sheets between copies. Printers usually want a minimum order of several books. If your volume is low, skip it: print this template in triplicate with consecutive numbers and you get the same challan book format for the cost of paper — with a digital copy already saved for the register.

Delivery challan vs tax invoice — what is the difference?

A tax invoice (Section 31, CGST Act) records a taxable supply, charges GST, and lets the buyer claim input tax credit. A delivery challan records movement without a sale, so no ITC passes on it. If the goods are sold later, raise the tax invoice then — the generator converts a challan to an invoice in one click, or issues a delivery challan cum invoice where dispatch and billing happen together.

How many copies of a delivery challan are required?

Three. Rule 55(2) requires the challan in triplicate: the original marked for the consignee, the duplicate for the transporter, and the triplicate retained by the consignor. Keep your copy for 72 months, and never reuse a serial number — auditors match challan numbers against e-way bills and stock registers, and a duplicate number is the first thing they flag.

Should I use the Word download or a PDF?

Word for print-and-sign challans — it holds its layout on any printer and edits like a letter. For a locked PDF the consignee cannot edit, save the Word file as a PDF or use the online generator, which exports one for you. If you issue several challans a week and want quantity and taxable value totalled automatically, the generator does that too.

Is an e-way bill required with a delivery challan?

Yes, once the consignment value exceeds ₹50,000 — generate the e-way bill on the GST portal and quote the challan number and date in it. Below ₹50,000 the challan alone covers most movements, though some states set stricter intra-state limits. Courts have also held both documents necessary for inter-state movement of exempted goods, so carry the challan even when no tax is due.
