Free Receipt Maker — Create a Payment Receipt Online

Make a receipt in about a minute: enter who paid, how much, and what for, then download a clean PDF. Cash, card, bank transfer or cheque — free, no sign-up, no watermark.

What a receipt is, and when you need one

A receipt is proof that money has already changed hands. It is the mirror image of an invoice: the invoice asks for payment, the receipt confirms it arrived. That difference matters more than it sounds. An invoice marked "paid" shows your side of the story; a receipt is the document the payer keeps for their own records, their expense claim, or their accountant.

You need one most often when cash is involved, because nothing else records the transaction. A tenant paying rent in cash, a customer settling a bill at the counter, a client handing over a deposit — in each case the receipt is the only paper trail either side has. Card and bank payments leave a statement behind, but a receipt still tells the payer what the money was actually for.

This receipt maker gives you the fields that make a receipt hold up: a receipt number, the date the money was received, who paid, the amount in both figures and words, how it was paid with a reference, and what the payment covered. Add your logo, signature and stamp, and the finished PDF looks like it came from a business rather than a notepad.

Your branding

Add a logo, e-signature and business stamp so the receipt carries your identity, not ours. No watermark.

Name, company and contact details, so the receipt names both sides of the transaction.

3. Brand it and download

Add your logo, signature and stamp, then export a print-ready PDF to hand over or email.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an invoice and a receipt?

An invoice requests payment and states what is owed and by when. A receipt confirms payment has already been received. Most jobs use both: the invoice goes out when the work is done, the receipt follows once the money arrives.

Is a receipt legally valid if it is not handwritten?

Yes. There is no requirement for a receipt to be handwritten. What matters is that it records who paid, how much, when, what for, and who issued it. A printed or PDF receipt with a signature is generally accepted, and it is far easier to read than a carbon copy.

Do I need to give a receipt for a cash payment?

In most places yes, and it is sensible everywhere. Cash leaves no bank record, so the receipt is the only evidence either side holds that the payment happened. Some jurisdictions require one specifically for cash or on request — New York and Massachusetts require rent receipts, for example.

Why does the receipt show the amount in words?

Writing the amount out in words as well as figures is the oldest anti-tampering measure there is: a figure can be altered with a pen stroke, a written line cannot. It is standard on cheques and rent receipts for the same reason, so this maker fills it in for you.

Can I number my receipts in sequence?

Yes. Signed-in users get automatic numbering — the next receipt continues your own RCPT- sequence, so there are no gaps or repeats for an auditor to question. As a guest you can set the number yourself.

Can I make a rent receipt with this?

Yes. Enter the tenant as the payer, the rent amount, the period it covers in the "received for" field, and the payment method. For India, add the landlord PAN in the notes when annual rent exceeds ₹1,00,000 and remember the revenue stamp on cash rent above ₹5,000.
